![]() ![]() Productivity apps, sure, but gaming is rough with the screen taking a long time to fully refresh and input lag being high. Not a knock on Splashtop specifically, but using Remote Desktop apps to game from anywhere off your local network is often unworkable. I have had the app for several years and have not maintained either subscription, except when I need remote access, which is rare, and growing rarer with the expanding capabilities of iPadOS and the immanence of cloud game streaming. The effective price of the app is $10 + $7 per month or $34 per year for the best experience. If remoting in from a desktop it is a niche feature requiring a touchscreen or inking to make sense. IMO syncing UIs only makes sense from phone to phone and tablet to tablet. The app would get five stars if every feature of the productivity pack were free, except for syncing your custom UIs across devices, which should be bundled with the Access Anywhere Pack or work through iCloud, rather than being its own subscription. The productivity pack is feature-packed, but most of the features should be included with the purchase of the app, since they run locally and have only been maintained, not expanded. ![]() Train Yard was so difficult because at the toughest moments, there were very few obvious moves. I'm building up to the 10x10 Mania Pack which I anticipate will have the greatest challenges, although I doubt the game designer can throw much else out there at this point. To be fair, I have only the Regular Pack and most of the 8x8 Mania Pack on Flow Free. Then I'd have to go back to the beginning (because I want the perfect number of moves) and accommodate for all of that extra space. In these squiggly levels, I would do that and then realize that there's tons of empty space. Then I would examine the remaining nodes and figure out what needed to go around what in order to connect everything nicely. When you can make assumptions about where things have to be in a puzzle that's completely tight with only a single solution, introducing lines that zig and zag all over the place to take up space is a new dimension of difficulty, because it challenges my initial assumptions of how the space is dealt with!įor instance, I would start with any straight lines that needed to be made or any lines that went around the edge of the space. Most of Flow Free is that way as well.īut sometimes, Flow Free will throw in a puzzle that has squigglies all over it! Those curve balls are the only type of level that gave me pause. There are no squigglies or unnecessary knots. Every line is tightly packed into the grid. In Bridges, everything is placed in the optimal way. The level structure of Flow Free is different of that than Bridges. I quickly beat the standard levels and then started to dive into the other packs. I was annoyed with Flow Free: Bridges and so I downloaded Flow Free and bought all of the DLC. And that's frustrating! I wanted "Hard" to actually mean something! The more you do it, the better you become, so when there are larger grids they aren't necessarily harder, they are just about the same. Once you fill in the pipes that are obvious, the rest of the paths become clear. That means that in every level, there are assumptions that have to be true. The problem with the game is that the pipes have to fill the entire square. Sometimes, I would have to put the game down for a couple of days before loading it back up to solve a single puzzle. Train Yard puzzles get progressively harder. I never felt this way about Train Yard, which presents similar gameplay to Flow Free: Bridges. Maybe this game is not about being a puzzle at all, instead it's a distraction. The game was so easy, in fact, that I thought that either (a) I was some sort of genius or (b) the appeal of the game is how simple it is. I finished all 300 levels perfectly in a single day - while traveling and doing work. Each page, I was presented with a variation of the puzzle and each one was solved in mere seconds. It was as if I was reading a book, not playing a game. I kept thinking the game would get harder, but it didn't. The bright colors on the black background look awesome.įlow Free: Bridges was not a challenge. ![]() You cannot mistake Flow Free for any other game. I could easily see why people seem to love the game and why my coworker would be commenting on it. ![]() The interface is great once you're inside the game and it's pretty. I have had few, if any, clumsy finger mistakes and even when I did, there is an undo button when you stray too far from an acceptable path (in other words, you disrupt one path with another). The game is very responsive to the player's touch. Let me start with a major positive-Flow Free: Bridges (and Flow Free) are beautifully done. I obsessed over the Cut the Rope puzzles until I finished all of those (and the "Experiments" pack). I was pretty happy with the prospect of a new puzzle game. This variant by the game company included a single "bridge" in the puzzle. ![]() Instead, I started with Flow Free: Bridges. And normally, iPhone games are only one dollar, so I can afford to make a mistake every now and then. I understand the "try before you buy" model, but I trust reviews enough to know what I'm going to like. I don't like looking at ads and I can be skeptical about DLC. I have a rule about free games, which is that I mainly don't play them. Each puzzle has a single solution (I presume some of the larger grids have a couple of options, but not many), and the game is elegantly displayed with bright colors on a black background. The game has a simple concept - connect like-colored nodes and fill the entire grid without intersecting. It didn't take long to discover what she was talking about.įlow Free is a free (ad-supported / DLC-supported) puzzle application for touchscreen phones (it looks like the game is available on all of the major platforms). They connect brightly colored lines or something. A coworker that commutes from Brooklyn was telling me about this hot new game, "Everyone is playing it. ![]() ![]() ![]() Unlike the way the florals in Amouage Gold dry down to a woody-incensey base, the florals in Dia become more floaty and aqueous. How does one smell water? I’m not sure if it’s something that I actually smell, or if the bouquet takes on a cool quality that merely reminds me of water. Dia, however, is less heavy than Gold, with a soapier smell in the beginning stages of the scent, and after a half hour of wearing it, I detect what I can only describe as an Ellena-like water note begin to develop. Dia echoes Gold’s sophistication and sense of luxury-and like Gold, it smells old-world perfumey, such that it is likely to draw the “old-lady perfume” criticism that so many of us perfumistas have now grown immune to. What is a surprise-and further testament, I believe, to Jean-Claude Ellena’s genius-is that Dia manages to smell so very much like Gold while at the same time being an adaptation that is friendlier to wear by day and which does, in fact, have Ellena’s signature (not immediately recognizable but evident as the scent dries down). (Much like Scheherazade settling in for a long night of story-telling in order to survive, and eventually win the love of, her crazed and embittered husband, the Sultan Schahriar, who would otherwise have her head.) It’s as if the thrust of the perfume is to act as a sumptuous cushion for lily-of-valley to recline upon, so that she can beguile with her tender beauty for a long stretch of time. But somehow lilting lily-of-the-valley glides over, or pops in and out of this deep dusky expanse without ever fully succumbing to it (helped along by a chiffon-like lemon note in the scent’s initial stages). Eventually honeyed-rose and warm jasmine envelope it to a degree, along with a deliciously Old-World, vintagey-smelling base, thick with vanilla, civet and moss (and though it’s not listed, vetiver, I believe). You don’t have to make a major commitment, like starting your own business, or dedicate a ton of time in the beginning to learning how things work. Drivers love being able to earn money on their own time. Lilies-of-the-valley are of the lily family*, and though here in the United States we think of them as cheerful harbingers of spring and, thusly, more daylight, I have to say that the cool-and-ethereal quality of the lily-of-the-valley note in Ubar does very much remind me of evening, the way it twinkles throughout the fragrance like a night star. The Uber driver reviews I’ve read talk a lot about the flexibility. I read somewhere that lily is the Persian personification of night: the words lil or lilleh are designations for evening. ![]() This newly relaunched fragrance, named for a long-lost ancient trading city of the Middle East, smells true to its heritage-and the way it juxtaposes the delicacy of lily-of-the-valley against the perfume’s deep and full-bodied fabric is masterful in creating the feeling of twilight settling over the open walls of a warm city. My bottle of Amouage Ubar arrived this morning and I have been in full swoon ever since. ![]() ![]() ![]() Martin A Clash of Kings Audiobook Online (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 2) George R. She was born in the same place as her family, her people, and was directly and actively connected to an ancient culture and bloodline. Almost three years ago, I met and became close to someone who was the opposite side of the coin to me-me who had no claim to anything, no properly directed desire for nationhood beyond the lazy, whitewashed imagination of mainstream Canada. Regardless of the ridicule such a name and such a bogus re-Africanization might have received-it was merely perhaps a more sophisticated or ironic type of minstrelsy that still made white folks laugh-it was self-acknowledgement. Perhaps there could have been a parallel to Black American jazz musicians of the 1960s converting to Islam and adopting African names, one I wasn’t so conscious of. Six years ago, I wrote this about the name: It made the shape of a fish-an early Christian password-or a WWII-era bomb, depending on one’s state of mind.)ĭuring my adolescence and early adulthood, Mboob was my stage name as a musician an imprint for my formative period as a creative artist, and the cassette albums and mixtapes that came out of it. I kept the identity above to myself and went with a symbol I found interesting: CXI, the number 111 in Roman numerals. (At the same time, I had started attending confirmation class in the United Church of Canada, where we were encouraged to develop our own personal symbols-as subsets of the obvious big ones, it almost went without saying. I’d also seen the Indian name Mehboob in a newspaper, and eventually learned of the Arabic word mahboob-beloved. An unconscious influence was the jazz/R&B musician James Mtume. The latter spelling was dodgy, Dune-inspired Orientalism, as I came to realize later, though narcissistically it created a symmetry within the word “me” using the letters of my adopted first name that I liked. The name I came up with for myself was Mboobe (“mm-BOO-bay”), later Mbu’ube. Something beyond the identity of a black person who had been raised as racialized but culturally zeroed and invisible-hence performing white-in an all-white community. If there was sincerity in the gesture, it was a reach for my own identity.
